Please welcome Mike Miller to UMBC. 

Mike Miller is joining UMBC as the Assistant Director of Research Security and Integrity within the Office of Research Protections and Compliance (ORPC).  He recently retired from the FBI after serving for over 20 years as a Special Agent.  In total Mike has over 30 years of law enforcement experience.  Mike attended the University of South of Florida in Tampa, Florida where he earned a bachelor's degree in criminology, a double major in Psychology and a Masters in Sociology.  Mike's first job in law enforcement was working as a student employee for the USF Police Department and is excited to return to a campus environment.  During his time at the FBI, Mike investigated online crimes against children matters, cyber crimes, and spent approximately ten years of his career working on national security matters, including counterproliferation to prevent the illegal transfer of sensitive U.S. technologies, including nuclear technology and materials to unauthorized individuals, groups and countries.  While working in national security for the FBI, Mike completed an 18-month temporary duty assignment with FBI Headquarters in Washington, D.C. as a Supervisory Special Agent.  Mike also served as the Outreach Coordinator to private industry and later as the Confidential Human Source Coordinator for the Baltimore FBI Division.  He especially enjoyed being involved in the recruitment, training and professional development of new FBI Special Agents. During the later part of his career, Mike served on interview panels for new agent applicants, served as a training agent in the field, mentored numerous new agents and was selected for a five-month temporary assignment to the FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia where Mike served as a Field Counselor overseeing a New Agents Training Class.   Mike brings a mix of investigative, internal compliance, leadership and training experience to his new role at UMBC.  

As the Assistant Director of Research Security and Integrity, Mike will be working closely with multiple groups on campus to assist our Research and Creative Achievement (RCA) community in navigating the increasingly complicated regulatory requirements associated with our RCA activities.  Specifically, Mike will be assuming the role of UMBC's Export Control Official and will lead support in the areas of Export Control, Data Protections, Conflicts of Interest, and Responsible Conduct of Research.  As such, Mike will be working closely with UMBC's CISO in establishing programs to comply with NSPM-33, NIST 800-171/CUI as well as CMMC regulations that are required, or quickly becoming required, when accepting federal sponsored awards.
